The ultimate guide to keyword research for a niche site

Accurately researched keyword can unlock serious power for your business. It helps you pay attention to your on-page SEO campaigns in order to draw more visitors to your site. Proper keyword research will also allow you to identify and make use of the best keywords via your off-page search marketing campaigns, especially in competitive keyword markers. This is particularly important in showing you keywords that you can rank. Additionally, proper keyword analysis can play a key role in niche site marketing campaigns. This will help you save a lot of money by reducing your time and energy. It can also enable you to identify the best keywords that convert better than others. You should not ignore the value of time.

However, in case you are running a website that is profit-oriented, you need to analyze your website’s visitors, the possibility of accessing your website, and what kinds of visitors participate in your conversions.

Similarly, do not rely entirely on initial research because it can come with varying degrees of validity or accuracy. Rather use a third-party traffic tracking program. This involvement will show you what type of keywords sent to your visitors will bring in the best results on your website. Once you have accomplished this result, ensure you capitalize on it. Then go back to your preferred keywords so that you can identify the phrases that are best-suited to increasing your conversions and inputs.

Well researched keywords will save you and your visitors a lot of effort used in searching certain topics or products. Proper keyword research enables one to have organized and straight to the point responses to online enquiries. You need to start out with a comprehensive research and paying attention as well as testing its results. By doing so, you will be miles ahead of your competitors.

The Google Keyword Tool (GKT) is very popular and used by most webmasters for keyword research. It has now changed to Google Keyword Planner. Maybe this new tool is just in co-ordination with the latest SE0 changes – or it may not be in accordance with such changes. This article is all about using this new keyword tool for webmasters, Bloggers etc.

Go to Keyword Planner and log in. If you haven’t created your AdWords account yet, you need to do that first.

Now login to your account and once you are in there click on the tools and analysis tab and select the keyword planner.

After the planner comes up you have three options:

  • You can search for keyword in the group ideas box
  • You could enter or upload a list of keywords or can paste in the box. I think you can update 999 keywords at one time.
  • You can actually important or create lists by a combining different kinds of keywords to see what comes up

Now click on the search for keywords in that group ideas box, paste “acne treatment” in your product and service box and look for some ideas for this particular phrase.

In the your landing page box you can put any URL to do some keyword research on your own site or on another site and see what keywords GKP suggests for a different page online or you can enter category in the product category box.

Look over to the top left part of the screen and you’ll see the Targeting panel. Here, you can make changes to:

  • The geographic location for your research
  • The language
  • The basis for your research (You can choose Google and also you can choose Google and search partners)
  • Negative keywords

Here in the Targeting panel you can click on any of these boxes and make changes according to your needs. You can edit the settings on the Targeting panel to get keyword thoughts and your own past statistics for such a campaign.

Click on the United States, change the selections for country you targeting and click on the box again to trinket

Click on All languages to be able to change language preference.

Click on Googleto be able to select Google or Google and search partners

Click on Negative keywords and put any word that you don’t want to see in your keywords. Here you can put “Free” if you don’t want to see keywords which have the word “Free” in them and then click in the top here to shrink the box.

In the right side you’ll see the Customize your search section which will help further target your research. Use Keyword filters to set a minimum for the Avg. monthly searches and you can look for keywords that have greater than or equal to 1000 average monthly searches and a suggested bid over $1.00 and there are 2 more option you can use.

Keyword options : here you can shortlist by adult content whether your keyword contains adult results or not. You can shortlist your result by putting various filters. You can shortlist your results by different historical statistics, choose to see certain keyword ideas, inclusion or exclusion of keyword ideas. To edit each filter, click the pencil icon. If you don’t want to see phrases that include the word “laser treatment” you can put it in this box. If you want to see only phrases that include the word “acne” put it in this box and again click in the top of the box to shrink it again.

Now click on Get ideas.

Now you will see two tabs: Ad group ideas and Keyword ideas.

Add group ideas tab which is useful to those running an AdWords campaign but for those of us doing keyword research it is not very important.

You need to click on the keyword ideas tab and now you can see a list of keywords and additional information in a tabular data sheet. You will see two sections, the first section will show you information about your exact keyword and the other section will show you information about other related keywords.

In the second section table, first column is keyword (by relevance) and best acne treatment. The next piece if you hover over Chart icon, view a twelve-month history of the keyword’s popularity in Google search.

Here you will see traffic data for the last 12 months so you can see in February 2013 it had over 12500 searches and in January 2014 it had over 18750 search so the search query is very steady all over the year so it’s obviously not a seasonal keyword (Stay away from seasonal keywords, always check the month by month segment search traffic data before you pick any keyword). Search query cannot be the same in all months. It varies from month to month. However, check the steadiness of the search volume. This makes it possible to see if certain keywords are more popular during specific seasons or if they are on an upward or downward trend.

In the “Avg. monthly searches” column, you’ll see the average monthly search volume for that keyword(Now GKP is defaulted to show you the exact search volume for your phrase). The ability to set keyword match types to broad, exact, and phrase matches is still available, but it has to be moved to the other side of the page.

Look at the far right side of the column headers and you’ll see a pencil icon with a drop-down arrow. Clicking on this icon will display your match options for your keywords. For SEO keyword research purposes, I recommend setting your preference to “Exact” match.

If you change it while you have results displayed, you’ll see a message that reads, “Great, next time you save a keyword it will be added as exact (or whatever you chose) match. Should we make that the match type for the rest of the keywords in your plan, too?” Click Yes or No based on your preference.

This Competition column is the competition for AdWords data. It’s the number of advertisers that were bidding and the level of competition that advertisers are bidding for this keyword in adwords and does not pertain to search engine optimization or SEO keyword competition.

Then there’s some Cost-per-click information. This new GKP has default estimated Cost Per Click. So you can know your CPC for your keywords.

You can scroll through the list and collect the keywords into a Plan (at the left) that would be similar to a shopping cart. You can select or remove keywords from the list.

It is better to download the data from here and then you can look at it in a spreadsheet on your computer and it’s much easier to read and organize the data that way.

Now you need to download the data and click on the download button.

You get an option if you want to see the month by month search volume traffic. You must click segment statistics by month and then you can download it to Excel in CSV format and they will show you how many keyword ideas are in the spread sheet.

Now your download available click to retrieve it and that should pop up with allowing you to open the data in Excel.

Now I can move the columns that’s I can see these keywords were and then you need to get rid some these columns that are not useful (competition, year, average CPC etc).

Now you can expand these rows so they show the monthly information.

Now it’s time to use your common sense and delete some of those keywords that you think are not related to your product or your website, narrow it down to 20 keywords.

Not it’s time to check your primary list of keywords so that you can find the low competitive keywords with maximum number of average monthly searches.

Now put two heading in the spread sheet, One is allintitle result and other is Longtail Pro KC (Keyword Competition).

Now go to Google.com and type-allintitle:”your first keyword in the primary list” and hit search.

The results will show up so keep your eyes on how many results do show. It’s an indication how competitive the keyword is. Save the value in your spread sheet is allintitle result column and do the above steps for all your keywords in the primary list.

Now if you already have Longtail Pro Platinum then open it or if you don’t have it I strongly suggest you to subscribe it (see why it’s better than other keyword research tools).

After Longtail Pro Open up click on competitor analysis tab.

Now put your fist keyword in the primary list and hit Analyze button. Keep your eyes on Average Keyword Competitiveness value. Save the value in your spread sheet in the Longtail Pro KC column and do the above steps for all your keyword in the primary list.

Now delete 5 months search column and only keep last month search volume.

After that select 3 columns of your spread sheet and click on Select & Filter and select Custom Sort.

  • Now Select Column list and choose Searches: Jan 2014 then select Sort On list and choose Values and lastly select Order list and choose Largest to Smallest
  • Click on Add Level tab
  • Now Select Column list and choose Allintitle result then Select Sort On list and choose Values and lastly Select Order list and choose Smallest to Largest
  • Click on Add Level tab again
  • Now Select Column list and choose Longtail Pro KC then Select Sort On list and choose Values and lastly Select Order list and choose Smallest to Largest.

Now that we are done with our keyword research and completion check you will see the list of keywords sorted by maximum search volume and minimum allintitle results, and Longtail Pro Keyword competitiveness. Now you can choose your desired niche keywords.

So, that’s how use the Google Keyword planner and Longtail Pro Platinum to do your keyword research and competition check and I hope that helps you a little bit.
